Throw a slumber party that won't be a snooze

Slumber parties are a cornerstone of childhood. Building forts, and telling ghost stories around the flashlight to see who gets scared first can build bonds between friends and family. Even though summer is coming to a close, there’s still time to throw an adventurous and exciting slumber party. But if you’re in the pinch and don’t know where to start, we’ve got a simple starter guide to inspire your next backyard slumber party.

First things first, pick a theme. Themed slumber parties can add a sense of magic to the night. Be it a pirate, under the sea or a Jungle Book theme for the little ones and superhero, or (the ever popular) Pokémon Go themed for older ones. For a Pirate theme, start with a station for everyone to accessorize their pirate outfit and face paint to create authentic pirate looks. For an underwater theme, grab some colorful paper lanterns and hang streamers off the ends to create jellyfish that light the way.

Keeping the little ones happy and satisfied while they play is key. Try to tie in your theme to your snack options but also give them the room to be creative – it makes for a more exciting party. For example set up a doughnut or cookie decorating station where they can add all sorts of sweet treats, like chocolate chips, sprinkles or waffle cone bits. Stop by any of our locations to stock up on waffle mix, chocolate chips and more to deck out your food stations with treats they’ll love.

Besides the full stomachs, a successful slumber party rides on your revellers being entertained. Your standard options include board games, playing dress up and story telling. If you want to change it up try a nighttime scavenger hunt in your backyard. Keeping with a pirate theme, divide the group into two, equipped with black water balloons and set their sights on an enemy paper pirate ship. The first team to sink the ship with their water cannon balls wins!
